Katarina Wit began skating at five. When her talent for skating was more evident, she received an entry at the Karl-Marx-Stadt school that specializes in youngsters with sporty talent. Here she first saw their coach Jutta M ller. Witt had her first breakthrough season in 1982 when she finished second at the World Championships held in Copenhagen. Since then, her grace and beauty have captivated the attention of everyone. Olympic victory at the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Games, Katarina Witt came through a closely battle to take home the women's figure skating gold medal. The victory she won four years earlier was a lot closer. She did not win the free skating contest however, she was awarded gold for her performances during the compulsory short and figure programme. Witt is the only female figure skater to win this event two times in the same year since Sonja Heine. Hall of Fame Witt had a great deal of success as an acting career, but she returned to her sport for competition at her participation in the Lillehammer Winter Games of 1994. The crowd was captivated by her performance despite the fact that she finished seventh. Witt received her induction to the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame, 1995.
